The recently announced package of measures to improve investment and employment in Cayman Brac should be welcome news after years of playing second fiddle to the ongoing development in Grand Cayman.
Some people may complain about “spoiling” the quiet charm of the Sister Islands, but who are these people exactly?
Are they Brackers that over the years have had to put up with shortages of food and other essentials?
Are they Sister Islanders that were forced to move to Grand Cayman or even further afield in order to find employment?
Or are they the fortunate few of independent means that are effectively cushioned from many of the exigencies of life that ordinary working men and women have to face?
We know of some people that have moved to the Sister Islands, ostensibly to escape from the overdevelopment in Grand Cayman, only to construct their own resort development. Perhaps “unspoilt” is not all it’s cracked up to be.
For many years, residents of Grand Cayman have established weekend homes in Cayman Kai as a temporary respite from the daily grind, why should they not do the same in Cayman Brac or Little Cayman, especially with the improved air service now proposed?
Cayman Net News has supported the people of the Sister Islands for a number of years by means of the publication of the weekly Bracker and Little Caymanian, in spite of many difficulties placed in our path. We have, however, persevered even though it has never been a profitable enterprise because of the very limited market there in terms of population and businesses.
These latest proposals may have been long in coming, but better late than never. |
