Better known to everyone on Little Cayman as “Ms. Liz”, Elizabeth McCabe says she loves fishing. She’s been visiting Little Cayman since 1980 where she usually spends six to eight weeks. She plans purposefully to ensure that these visits occur during the period of her birthday in March and on her last visit celebrated her 97th birthday.
Ms Liz was born in San Francisco, California on 20 March 1911, and is still capable of doing anything and everything with much ease, thereby making it difficult for one to decipher her true age. Ms. Liz can be described as no ordinary lady, with her hobbies including fishing, beachcombing, photography and rock hunting.
She owned and operated a newspaper company in Jackson Hole, Wyoming near the Yellow Stone National Park now named the Jackson Hole News and Guide. The company was in operation under the stewardship of her and her late husband from 1968 to 1997. Currently she lives in Jackson Hole Wyoming and has four daughters, two grandchildren and one great grandchild.
She recalls fondly when she first visited Little Cayman in 1980 being met at the airport by Sam McCoy. “I just love him and his family who are always so hospitable, and I always visit him to reminisce on the good old times,” she said. She further commented that she loves Little Cayman and the warmth of the residents. “I can do a lot of things here such as fishing from the shore without going into a boat and I believe Little Cayman is my piece of heaven on earth as many of my friends are here, and every moment spent here is a memorable occasion,” she added.
Ms Liz is the only child for her mother and her mom lived to age ninety, so longevity is evident within the family. The people of Little Cayman states that Ms Liz will probably live for another 20 years as she is so strong and full of life. “Age is only a number and I am looking forward to visiting again next year for my ninety eighth birthday,” said Ms Liz. |
