On Monday, 28 April 2008 the Dale Gordon Memorial Basketball Tournament got underway with a casual opening on the court at the Cayman Brac High School. In attendance and giving remarks were Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Moses Kirkconnell, Pastor of the Creek Seventh Day Adventist Church Victoriano Pomare-Mc Laughling, Sports Instructor Mitchum Sanford and Eula Cameron, mother of the late Dale Gordon. A total of four high school teams are participating in the youth division, while two senior teams from the community and one from the high school are involved in the senior division league.
The first two games of the tournament were in the youth division and saw Celtic’s square off against Pistons. Playing only 3v3 in the division and half-court, a hard working Celtic’s just edged the Pistons 12-10 with both Andrew Frederick and Joshua Smith leading the scoring for their teams at 8 points each. Team Heat truly exemplified their name by blazing the Rockets 32-0 in their encounter, with Brandon Myrie lighting the blaze and scoring 22 points.
In the senior division, Popo Jeb’s Pizza dug deep into their line-up roster to keep a fresh rotation of players into the game to knock-off the young, fast and energetic Brac Stunners in the opener 31-23. Jason Abungan led Pinoy with 9 points while last year’s MVP Michael Salazar trialed closely with 7 points.
Seventeen-year-old Jonathon Myrie stretched his scoring tally to 10 points for the Brac Stunners to be top scorer of the night in the senior division.
Creek Seventh Day Adventist Church, Paramount Carpets Cayman Brac and the Sports Association of the Sister Islands are the sponsors of the Dale Gordon Memorial Basketball Tournament and Taron Scott 3-Point Shootout & Lay-up Competition. The tournament is held every Monday and Thursday night at the Cayman Brac High School Campus from 6:00 pm. |
