Opinion: Urgent requirement for an air ambulance service

The necessity of obtaining an air ambulance for the Cayman Islands cannot be emphasised any more strongly. It is impractical and out of context for a country developed to this stage not to have these services at its disposal that could save lives in an emergency.
The reality is that the Sister Islands have been faced with medical emergencies on numerous occasions, when patients have had to wait for long hours, in some instances, in excruciating pain, with the likelihood of their condition getting worse before they can be flown out.
This scenario has been the case for far too long; a plane has to be chartered to transport the injured or sick individual to other medical facilities that are better equipped to deal with such injury or illness.
What is equally disturbing about this undesirable situation is that, when a patient requires medical attention at a facility outside of the Cayman Islands, the fees associated with transporting the individual must be paid up front or secured by a credit card. This is often out of the reach of many people.
Needless to say, this should not be the case when someone’s life and wellbeing are hanging in the balance.
If we continue to profess a love for our country and its people, then the acquisition of such an air medical transport should be a priority, and providing the necessary infrastructural facilities should be of paramount importance to the powers that be. | | | | Reads : 265 |

Deri Hill: This is in response to the letter published in the paper regarding: “Opinion: Urgent requirement for an air ambulance service.” I understand that the majority of us have had to bear the burden of seeing our loved ones ill to the point where it is out of the reach of Cayman’s expertise, but let’s not point the finger at the service which has saved many of their lives. It may not seem feasible to “charter” services in order to facilitate health care overseas, but have we taken a closer look at the picture as to why the lengthy wait in these cases? Let’s start at the beginning. We receive a call to transport a patient; we contact the companies and arrange the flight. That is the easy part in which we conduct, it is on the patient’s side that carries the “red tape”, insurance must approve, they must be accepted by the hospital to which they plan to travel and they must have approval by a receiving physician. Which do you think takes longer? As a company we have seen and done it all. My grandmother Marjorie Bodden has worked diligently in an effort to make this service as effective and efficient as possible and has in no way fallen short. She has saved many lives when insurance failed, she guaranteed payment and went out on the line for complete strangers. I urge you to take a better look into this matter before you “require the urgent need for air ambulance service”, because in the end you have saved yourself money and you are guaranteed the professionalism and expertise of the best. In regards to Charles Reid’s statement, “we have been working diligently towards providing a quality, Cayman-based, Cayman owned and operated, properly regulated and insured, dedicated Air Ambulance Service” We provide quality service in a timely manner, the company is Caymanian-owned and operated, properly regulated and insured and we are very dedicated. I have seen my grandmother work all hours of the night waiting on insurance to pull through and an acceptance notice from the hospital, I have seen her in the pouring rain on the tarmac loading patients in order to expedite the process more quickly. I am proud to be the granddaughter of such a hardworking woman, and for all of those who have taken the time to thank her and appreciate her, I thank you, because not many people can do what she has done. |
| Dr. Charles H. Reid, MA, BM, BCh: Further to the “Opinion” in The Bracker last Friday, let me assure your readers that since January 2007, we have been working diligently towards providing a quality, Cayman-based, Cayman owned and operated, properly regulated and insured, dedicated Air Ambulance Service. We expect to launch the Cayman Air Ambulance Service in January next year. |
