Students and teachers from the Little Cayman Education Service were recently visited by Iggy the iguana mascot, and the Department of Environmental Health’s (DEH) Promotions Officers.
The 6 June visit was part of the DEH campaign to raise awareness in Cayman’s school children, regarding recycling and littering issues. The group was treated to a presentation on environmental awareness which centred on environmental care through conserving recyclable materials and avoiding littering.
“The visit was a great opportunity to interact with students and teachers in Little Cayman,” said DEH Public Education & Promotions Officer Tania Johnson. “They thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and we were able to fulfill our goal of promoting the anti-littering and recycling message to students on all three islands.”
The department promotes awareness of environmental health issues such as recycling through school presentations and lectures, attending fairs and producing informational brochures.
The Education Centre in Little Cayman has been involved and has been sensitized to environmental issues that could possible harm them. The students and teachers participated in an Earth Day clean up exercise where they removed debris from the beaches in Little Cayman.
The Department of Environmental Health continues in their efforts to promote environmental health commencing with the young minds of students, as these practices would continue throughout their adult years hence resulting in a safer environment for all living species.
Anyone wishing to contact the DEH to arrange a school or group presentation is advised to call the Promotions Officer on 244-4152 / 949-6696 or email her at Tania.Johnson@gov.ky
