Road safety targeted in the Brac

Published on Friday, July 4, 2008 Email To Friend    Print Version

Cayman Brac police have launched a new campaign designed to improve safety on the roads.
Operation ‘Street Safe’ is a high-visibility policing initiative which targets areas most affected by illegal and poor driving practices, said the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) in a press release.

The campaign was devised in response to concerns from the community that road users are not abiding by the traffic law. Complaints have centred around speeding, drink driving and, more recently, the ‘burning’ of tyres (wheel spinning), a trend which appears to have developed amongst young drivers, said the RCIPS.

“This campaign is about detecting and deterring offences,” said Sergeant Matthew Dawson, who is leading the operation. “The traffic law is in place to protect all road users and drivers have a responsibility to abide by it at all times.”

Officers are making their presence felt by carrying out speeding checks using hand-held radar and static radar (in vehicles) and conducting spot checks on such things as insurance certificates, drivers licences, coupons and lights.

“We hope this campaign will drum home the message that road safety needs to be taken seriously,” said Sergeant Dawson. “There are clearly concerns in the community around how people use the road, and we are responding to the issues brought to our attention.”

Anyone with information about crime taking place in the Cayman Islands can contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS).
