Rev. Audley Scott and his wife Shirley Ann Scott
The Ministry of the Hillside Chapel began in November 1989 by Rev. M. Lee King as Pastor, his wife Barbara as secretary/treasurer and Audley Scott as director of music. The membership then stood at approximately 40 and has grown considerably over the years, taking it 116 members to date.
On 31 March 2007 Rev. King and his wife Barbara retired from the ministry at Hillside Chapel, and their almost 41 years of dedicated service to the Baptist Churches and the people of Cayman Brac as a whole. With the retirement of Rev. King, on the advice of the church council, the church membership called brother Audley Scott as interim Pastor effective 01 April 2007, and in March 2008 he was called to Hillside Chapel as full-time bi-vocational Pastor.
On Sunday, 22 June 2008 at a special service, the church was filled to capacity with its members and friends to witness the occasion of the Ordination of Pastor Audley Scott as a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Dr. Robert L. Mounts from the Florida Baptist Convention of which Hillside Chapel is affiliated, presided over the ceremony.
Also taking part in the service were Elder John Fleming, Shakier Khan, Mark Tibbetts and Kay Bellino, members of the church body. Everyone in attendance was invited to have lunch with Rev. Scott and the Hillside Chapel family in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. Rev. King and his wife were scheduled to have been at the function to do the order of Ordination, but due to illness they could not travel. A letter was read expressing their best wishes and regrets for their unavoidable absence.
Rev. Scott has been involved with the ministry at Hillside Chapel for 19 years. When asked what difference he would like to see in the church he said: “I would like to see the Sunday School ministry expanded, re-institute a youth & children’s programme, and perhaps an after school programme later on.
“Having greater fellowship with all the churches in Cayman Brac will be a welcomed boosts to further develop greater community cohesiveness and the overall growth of each resident.”
As an ordained pastor, he feels it is an awesome responsibility and a challenge, which he accepts with humility. “I really do feel called by God to do this work and I trust Him for His guidance.” Rev. Scott has been actively involved in the Cayman Brac community without limiting his ability to the church. He has been the Rotary President of Cayman Brac four times, Chairman of the Youth Development committee, Past PTA president of the Primary and High School, Master of Ceremony for numerous functions, Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, Marriage Officer, Vacation Bible Director, and Insurance agent, to name a few.
His ability to motivate and advocate on behalf of the many boards he serves has not gone unnoticed. At the opening of the Youth Development Centre recently, he was commended for his attributes and his persistent advocacy for the centre to be opened on Cayman Brac.
The comment was made that through his tireless efforts, Cayman Brac has been blessed with a centre today. He was also recognized at the recent change of guard at the Rotary ceremony. He has been president four times, being committed to the work that the club has engaged in within the community.
Rev. Scott, his wife Shirley Ann, immediate family and the church family wish to express their heartfelt thanks to everyone for making this solemn and wonderful occasion most memorable. Special thanks are extended to Dr. Mounts and his wife Glenna, who traveled from Florida, Elder John Fleming from William Pouchie Memorial United Church, Kim and Margaret Awe and Theresa Smith who traveled from Grand Cayman for the occasion.
Commendations are also in order to former Cayman Brac Rotary President John Elliot and his wife Ann and fellow Rotarians. Rev. Scott said special thanks to Dr. John Sullivan, Executive Director/Treasurer of the Florida Baptist Convention, for making the necessary arrangements with Dr. Mounts to join in the celebration and for the gift of the beautiful ‘Apologetics Study Bible.’ |
