Peter Cockhill Partner at Ogier

The Cayman Islands team will have law firm Ogier as the main sponsor going into the HSBC Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships at the North Sound Club from 3-10 August.

The event, now in its 52nd year, is being held in Cayman for the first time since 1997 and will feature Cayman’s best golfers as they compete against representatives from the Caribbean Golf Association’s 10-member countries in what is widely considered to be the premier Caribbean golf event.

Among the players on the Cayman team is Ogier’s Partner Colin MacKay, who was selected by the Cayman Islands Golf Association (CIGA) to compete for the Mid Amateur Men’s Ramon Baez Trophy.

Mr MacKay will compete along with fellow Cayman golfer Trent Riggins in this segment of the tournament, with 12 other Cayman golfers vying for the four additional cups and trophies at stake this year.

“We are particularly pleased to be able to support one of our own as he represents Cayman on the regional stage, and we are certain that the Cayman team will make a strong showing at the event.”

The Cayman team will compete in each division of the Championships, which are broken down by age group. Playing for the Men’s Hoerman Cup are Johnny Widmer, Ali Hall-Jones, Michael Wight, Joel Dodson and Robert Woods.

Other men’s events include the Senior Men’s Francis/Steele-Perkins Cup where Cayman’s representatives will be Robert Chilman and Stephen Heal with the Super Senior Men’s Higgs & Higgs Trophy competitors being Andy Newton and Don Stewart. Samantha Widmer, Nitti Howe and Siobhan Ribbins round out the team, competing for the Ladies George Teale Cup.

The overall prize, the Arthur Zaidie Trophy, will be awarded to the country with the highest scores across all five events.

Ogier’s sponsorship will cover the cost of uniforms for the Cayman team; additionally, the firm has pledged its support for the tournament by signing on as a platinum sponsor of the event. This additional sponsorship will help CIGA defray the cost of staging the event, which includes the green fees and the awards ceremony.
