Sports Person of the Week - Janet Sairsingh

Published on Tuesday, April 14, 2009Email To Friend    Print Version

Janet Sairsingh

Despite her more than three decades in sports, Janet Sairsingh appears stronger than ever. This could be attributed to the fact that this feminine phenomenon of netball, volleyball and badminton took up bodybuilding.

Ms. Sairsingh’s athleticism was initially honed at George Town Primary School, where in 1972, she participated in track and field events. Specializing in the high jump and the long jump, she took awards in all the local competitions. She later started playing Netball in primary school and perfected her skills.

Representing the Cayman Islands in netball for twenty years, she has been a fixture in regional tournaments throughout the Eastern Caribbean for 20 years. She considers the opportunity to have carried the flag of her nation to so many countries as the “most rewarding experience” of her life.

Locally, she has won many awards playing for the Super Seven netball team. She has also ventured into volleyball and badminton, where once again, she proudly represented Cayman Islands throughout the Caribbean.

In badminton, she became the champion of singles, doubles (along with Louise Leslie) and mixed doubles (with Danny Scot). Her ultimate achievement was claiming the Triple Crown, a feat she maintained for three years.

She moved on to squash in the mid eighties, continuing to represent the Cayman Islands in the Northern Caribbean and other regional tournaments.
