Sports Person of the Week - Ashley Scaletta

Ashley Scaletta

Ashley Scaletta has been involved in sports ever since she was four years old and sat on her first pony, and said ‘make it go’, according to her mother Jane van der Bol. Ashley has a paint pony called Fancie who taught her how to jump.

She was also involved in gymnastics at age six and discovered she had talent balance on the beam. Her instructor thought he had a prodigy, but alas, Ashley went back to her favorite sport of horseback riding.

As Ashley grew older, she became interested in training with her mother in martial arts. Ashley trained for three years in Taekwondo and achieved her Black Belt at the age of 9. After moving to the beautiful Cayman Islands, Ashley quickly settled into horseback riding with Mary McTaggart at the Equestrian Center. Ashley has represented the Cayman Islands in the United States at the 2008 CADI (Children of the Americas Dressage Invitational).

She also competed in Jamaica in the 2008 Caribbean Equestrian Association (CEA) Junior Jumping Competition. She hopes to qualify to ride for Cayman once again, in June, for the 2009 CEA show being held in Cayman, and in October for the 2009 CADI event. Ashley still has her horse, Fancie, in the United States, who just had a foal named Lucky Cherokee.

Ashley hopes to bring Cherokee to Cayman in a couple of years to start his training. While Ashley’s main sport is horseback riding, she also enjoys being active at St Ignatius Prep School in netball and learning to sail at the Cayman Islands Sailing Club.
