The 2009 B-League KPMG Bounty Hunters.
The KPMG Bounty Hunters declared open season on the Hellcats with a 22-6 beat down in co-ed softball action at the Field of Dreams.
The victory kept the Bounty Hunters slim division championship hopes alive. They trail Julius Baer by two games with three games remaining.
KPMG’s Wednesday 14 October night’s victory avenged an earlier season loss to the Hellcats. Bounty Hunters Coach Charles Pulcine said his team wasn’t psyched out by the ferocious Hellcats.
“They strolled onto the field with their Hellcat swagger, in their red jerseys, dragging the beer cooler to the dugout like a caveman dragging a kill,” he said. “But we were focused on revenge.”
In spite of pitches with freakish hang-time by the Hellcat pitcher, Adrean Russell, fireworks ensued from the beginning of the game, as batter after batter mashed the ball for the Bounty Hunters.
On defence, the KPMG was equally impressive, turning in a club record two double plays, thanks to the lightning-fast glovework by shortstop Martyn Banks.
The KPMG ladies also came to play. Odie Markrygianis’ star shone bright, making plays and directing outfield traffic. Danielle Ebanks started rolling with a pop fly catch at the catcher position, and followed with a trip around the bases on offence. To round out the evening, Sahana Vaidya smacked her first ever infield home run, giving her much joy and stories to tell her friends.
Chuggers turn sluggers
The Caybrew Chuggers, who suffered through some early-season offensive woes, put up big numbers for the second straight week, shellacking the KPMG A-league team 22-8.
The game was over almost before it began, as Caybrew tallied nine runs in the top of the first inning, capped off with a grand slam by David Gibb. The Chuggers added five more runs in the second inning and three in the third to open up a 17-3 lead and then they coasted from there.
Chuggers Coach Alan Markoff said he didn’t know what got into his team, who have outscored their opponents 46-12 in their past two games.
“We’ve been ripping, that’s for sure,” he said. “But I’m just as pleased about the improvement in our defence.”
Andrea Hughes continued her hot hitting with three hits and three RBI and Gibb went 4 for 4 with 6 RBI to pace the Chuggers offensively.
Caybrew leadoff hitter Mark Wallace, who scored five runs against KPMG-A and has 12 hits in his last 13 at-bats, analysed the situation.
“If we can average 16 to 18 runs a game and give up less than 10 every game, we’re going to win a lot of ballgames,” he said.
The victory kept the Chuggers one game back of division-leading KM Ltd. in the A-2 Division, with two games remaining for each team. Those two teams face off on the last night of the regular season on 29 October, in a game which could very likely decide the division champion.
