The U-9 “Maroon Marauders” from Red Bay Primary were victorious for the second week running in the 2009/2010 CUC Primary Football League this past Saturday 17 October at the T.E. McField Sports Complex (Annex Field), as they defeated newcomers Montessori by the Sea by a score of five goals to nil. Scorers for Red Bay Primary were Trey Ebanks (3), Navarro Pierson (1) and Oladapo Bailey (1).
With the heat a major factor for both teams, Red Bay Primary took the initiative and settled into their passing game quickly. This being Montessori’s first game on the Annex’s artificial surface, it took a little time for the youngsters to get the feel and bounce of the ground, as they tried to work the ball forward to their strikers. The more experienced Red Bayers gave no quarter to their smaller, inexperienced opponents but still found it difficult to get past Montessori’s last line of defence.
It was not long before Red Bay found their shooting boots and zeroed in on Montessori’s goal. Gradually gaining the upper hand in possession, Red Bay’s youngsters finally decided to try their luck from long range and it paid off. Two quick goals saw Red Bay go two up, adding one more before the half as Montessori defended vigorously. Montessori’s David Pitcairn led the charge for his Montessori teammates, showing some dazzling skills in midfield as he tried to haul his team back into the game.
The second half opened with a barrage of attacks by the “Maroon Marauders,” but Montessori held firm with Marissa Harrison, Montessori’s only female participant, in the thick of the action. Her tenacity in defence mirrored that of her teammates’ effort as they fought tooth and nail to stem the maroon tide and orchestrate a few attacks of their own. Red Bay answered with two more goals, which ultimately finished off the contest.
Praise to both sets of parents and teachers who raised the noise level on numerous occasions, supporting their respective teams until the very end. Congratulations to the Red Bay contingent of coaches who maintain a perfect record and maximum points going into week three. For the Montessori coaches, great job in motivating their players to continue on and never give in. Both teams were inspirational in the way they played, their effort, commitment and sportsmanship, after all, this is “the powerful game”.
