Action at the Smith Road Oval recently.
One of the tournament’s big teams, Guyana, came out in style yesterday as the CLICO Cayman Challenge Trophy continued at Smith Road Oval. Guyana showed why they are carrying the odds in front of the largest crowd for the year. Guyanese residents came out in their numbers to support and they were not disappointed. Although leading runs machine in Cayman’s local cricket this year Captain Saheed Mohamed, did not trouble the scorers, Kevin Bazil 66 and Troy David 58 provided the depth in the Guyana camp.
Having defeated the Cayman Islands last week, World Stars approached the match with added confidence. With Guyana 2 wickets down for 20 runs, World Stars were on track, but a 100 runs partnership between Bazil and David restored the balance in Guyana’s favor, taking the total to 169 for 5 wickets.
Jalon Linton 38 and Laurence McIntosh 31 gave the World Stars an inspiring start, however, impressive bowling from Mohamed and the Bazil twins Kevin and Kevon restricted the World Stars to 135 for 9 wickets. Guyana won by 34 runs.
Barbados displayed awesome batting piling up 190 for 6 wickets, the biggest score to date in this competition. Ramon Sealy 83 and Pearson Best 36 combined to score heavily against the English & Irish Lions. Sean Nevling 3 and Paul Hogg 2 were the chief wicket takers for the Lions.
The English & Irish Lions reply was interrupted by rain and their target was reduced to 150 in 14 overs. Paul Hogg, 23 and Nick Sellars, 20 took the challenge, but excellent bowling by Ryan Bovell 3, and David Ross and Cleviston Hunte 2 wickets each, restricted the Lions’ chase. Barbados won by 57 runs.
