Free squash lessons for juniors and adults

The Cayman Islands National Squash Association (CINSA) is offering free squash lessons for Cayman’s adults and juniors.

As a way of ensuring that the sport is accessible to everyone, CINSA is teaming up with the South Sound Squash Club and creating a programme that offers a month of free lessons for beginners of any age.

The lessons are weekly sessions on court, and include free court hire, free equipment and a coach. The sessions are aimed at beginners and people new to squash.

Squash Pro Dan Kneipp says the free lessons have already been extremely popular. “We’ve been running the free adult lessons for four months now” he said.

“Each month we’ve been completely full, and it has helped a lot of new players get into the sport. Cayman squash has been offering free lessons to schools for years, but now we need to focus on extending this to the afterschool and weekend squash programmes. Our goal with this programme is to eventually ensure that all junior squash is free.”

The programme is being coordinated by two former Cayman squash champions, who both now have kids of their own involved in the junior squash programme, Jeff Broderick is a former Caribbean Champion and represented Cayman at the last Commonwealth Games, and Janet Sairsingh is a former Cayman Champion who earlier this year helped steer Cayman’s Vets squash team to a gold medal at the Caribbean Championships.

“This is about grassroots squash,” said Mr Broderick. “We’re creating a programme that is aimed at getting lots of juniors and adults onto the squash court to have some fun, and to get fit at the same time. This programme isn’t replacing our successful Butterfield Junior squash programme, but creating a feeder group that can try out the sport for free before they get more involved.”

The free adult lessons are being offered every Monday night for a month, with the next group starting in November. The free junior lessons are on Saturday mornings, running weekly for a month. The first group will begin on 14 November, with the 2nd group beginning on 9 January. For more information and to sign up please email dan@candw.ky.
