Phil Brown rushed for a touchdown in the first overtime to lead the Goldfield West Bay Hellcats to the Men’s championship with a 12-6 victory over Dog House last Saturday at Ed Bush Stadium in West Bay.

It was Goldfield’s fourth championship of the decade. This win was no exception. Goldfield opened the scoring in the first half with a Frecko Ebanks toss to Perry Levy and that held until Jon Pump hauled in a Johnny Mack pass, eluded a defender and raced 38 yards into the end zone to tie it up. Both defences held late in the game and the scene was set for overtime.

Brown rushed up the middle on the first play of overtime and the Goldfield offensive line paved the way for the 10-yard score. Dog House, looking a little fatigued, could not hold the rush from Goldfield in overtime, as Johnny Mack was sacked twice and could not put the ball in the end zone to knot the score.

Chester Hurlstone was the star of the day for the Goldfield defensive unit, recording 5 tackles and 2 sacks. Frecko Ebanks led the offense, going 7 of 15 with a touchdown pass and an interception. Levy had 4 receptions including the score. For Dog House, who will have to suffer through another year as bridesmaids, the defensive line was key to keeping the score close.

Lief Ristimaki and Carl Brenton led the way with a sack each and 3 tackles each. Defensive Player of the Year Justin Bodden had 3 tackles as well. Mack finished the game 6 of 20 passing with the lone scoring toss to Pump.
