Haines to compete in the Cayman Marathon

Derek Haines, President of the Cayman Rugby Union.

Derek Haines, the Immediate Past President of the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman and nine times President of the Cayman Rugby Union, will be racing the whole distance of the Cayman Islands Marathon to raise funds to be shared between Rotary projects, such as Meals on Wheels, and Youth Rugby development.

The Cayman Marathon (26.2 miles) will be held this year on Sunday, 6 December.
Mr Haines, 61 years old, has run numerous marathons with his fastest time being under 3 hours, his slowest 4 hours and change and his best Cayman finish 6th.

For every $25 promised, a sponsor can have a guess at the time Derek will finish this year’s race with the closest getting a grand prize of 6 bottles of Veuve Cliquot champagne, plus $250 Rugby Club bar tab and a 2nd prize of $250 Rugby Club bar tab. DOTC (Dead on the Course) can also be a guess.

“We are also putting in two teams from Camana Bay (CBAY1 and 2) and I will run the first leg for CBAY 1 and then continue on. I have run over 1400 miles this year in training for this race so I am hoping to get round in one piece. The charities being supported are most worthwhile and I will be very grateful for any support that people can give,” Mr Haines said.

Pledges can be made to Derek at helderci@candw.ky, John Felder on jfelder0244@verizon.net or any member of the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman.
